If you have decided to have a farm you are probably interested in living a more conservative, traditional lifestyle, which means when it's freezing out, you want something to do other than watch TV and play video games. In this blog I will share some of the things we do when we take an indoor break.
This is an image of our creek as we see it off our back patio, the white strings are strands of electric fencing.
Music
Playing musical instruments is one of our favorite ways to spend our free time. We have been playing the piano for years and some of us have started to play the violin recently.
For beginners, the piano is supposed to be the easiest instrument to learn, and online lessons work well as there isn't as much technique involved as with other instruments.
Learning to play any musical instrument requires a commitment to practice, but that practice can reward you with years of enjoyment.
Embroidery
A simple and inexpensive hobby, embroidery is basically stitching pictures with colored thread.
Once you are good at the basics, a more advanced version of embroidery, called thread painting, uses just a few strands of many different colors of thread to create very realistic images.
Crochet
While the end result of crocheting is similar to knitting, crochet uses a hook instead of needles to create hats, blankets, scarves etc.
One thing I would highly recommend for beginners is that you don't go with a really cheap yarn, it just makes it more difficult. I like the yarn from the brand Yarn Bee, which is sold by Hobby Lobby, although there are many other brands of nice yarn.
Cooking
What is more fun than using food from your own farm to cook? Check out our recipe section to find some recipes we like, and if you have favorite recipes using farm products (eggs, milk, meat, fruits and veggies etc.) that you would like to share, please send them over! If we make a recipe you send, and enjoy it, we will be sure to add it to our site!
Sewing
Making quilts is a traditional farm activity, but there are plenty of other things that can be sewn! We have made quite a few things over the years, including bags, quilts, clothes, and potholders.

If anyone else has a suggestion for something to do indoors, please let us know!
I love this blog!! I think playing instruments is one of the most enjoyable ways to spend time during these chilly days, and would like to recommend the recorder as another fun way to spend time indoors!
Whoever is working on that embroidery, is doing great!! That's beautiful work!
