Top 6 reasons to raise your own chickens

Updated: Feb 14

#1 Higher Qality Food

One of the most popular reasons people choose to raise their own chickens is for a source of food that they have control over. Most commercially raised chickens

never see sunlight, breath fresh air or eat natural food, not to mention all the drugs, vaccines, and other chemicals they are fed, treated with, or exposed to.

Even organic chicken is usually kept under these conditions and may have been vaccinated.

When you raise your own chickens, you can ensure they get natural food (no ground feathers etc.), plenty of fresh air and sunshine and never a drop of chemicals.

#2 Not as Expensive

With inflation causing prices to rise on almost everything the cost of food is going up too, in some places egg prices have risen over ten times the normal price, going from under a dollar to up to ten dollars a dozen in a fairly short amount of time, meat prices have also risen considerably, and costs are likely to keep rising, a big thing you can

do to be less affected by this is to raise your own food, and chickens are an ideal way to get started.

#3 Increased Self Sufficiency

Supply chain issues, purchasing limits, and increasingly untrustworthy governments are causing more and more people to realize the need to be more self-sufficient and less dependent on huge, government-controlled companies for their food. By raising chickens, you can produce your own meat, eggs, fertilizer for your garden, and even make some money!

#4 Pest control

Chickens are great for controlling many insects that can be harmful to you, your garden, or other animals, such as grasshoppers, ticks, fly larva and many others. They can be rotated on pastures after grazing animals have eaten down the long grass and

exposed the bugs, or around the garden to help reduce the number of harmful insects near your plants.

#5 Education

Chickens are an ideal animal for children to raise, they don't cost much to raise, are easy to handle and house, don't require much time, space or skill and can be raised almost anywhere. Children can learn to raise chickens for eggs, meat, profit, show, pest control, or just as fun farm pets.

#6 Profit

With so many people looking to start raising their own food chickens are a great choice if you are looking to make money farming. Some options for selling include meat, eggs (for eating or hatching) chicks, and point-of-lay pullets.
