Permaculture Orchard - First Steps

Updated: Oct 17, 2023

We have still not gotten our order from Stark Bro's, but here's where we are so far.

Site

We chose to put our orchard on the top of the small hill to the north of our house. It will be in full sun most of the day, and it will also be visible from the yard (easier to enjoy and take care of it).

Layout

Our orchard (as long as it fits) will be about 50'X 105'. We are spacing the trees 15' in all directions, so that gives us four rows of 4-5 fruit trees per row.

Holes

We are using the tractor to dig the holes, which makes this process a lot easier!

We are digging the holes about 18" deep, (and hoping that's deep enough). We don't have the trees yet, so we don't know for sure how deep to go.

Trees

For choosing the trees, we pretty much just went off the descriptions, what we like to eat, and what grows well here.

Here is the list of trees that should be arriving this Saturday (we purchased two of each).

  • Elberta peach

  • Amoore Sweet nectarine

  • CandyCrisp apple

  • Moonglow pear

  • Sunrise pear

  • Liberty apple

  • Carolina Belle peach

  • Bartlett pear

  • Santa Rosa pear

  • SunGlo nectarine

  • Starking Delicious plum

Berries

We chose the berries the same way we chose the trees.

  • Heritage red raspberry

  • Encore red raspberry

  • Chandler blueberry

  • Prime-Ark Freedom primocane blackberry

  • Elliott blueberry

  • Pink Lemonade blueberry

  • Silver Dollar blueberry

  • Patriot blueberry

  • Arora honeyberry

  • Boreal Beauty honeyberry

Soil

The soil where we are putting the orchard seems pretty good already, but we plan to start grazing our rabbits over the area to improve it.
