Ducks in the Garden

Writer's picture: Isabelle HansenIsabelle Hansen

We have been having a problem with grasshoppers in the garden this year, and since we don't use any chemicals in our garden, we decided to put our ducks in there. We couldn't put the chickens in the garden because they would eat the produce and scratch up the soil.

So far, they are doing a great job, there are almost no grasshoppers at all on the ground and we get as many off the plants as we can for them.

They love to eat them and will stand around you waiting for you to give them some!

We also put their pool uphill of our inground box so when we dump it out for cleaning the water goes to the plants.

I'm not sure of all the bugs that they will eat but, we have seen that they don't like stink bugs or wheel bugs and I don't know if they will eat squash bugs.

I do know they will eat grasshoppers, slugs and crickets.

Tips

If you are wanting to add ducks to your garden there are a couple things I recommend. First, if your plants are in the ground wait until they are taller than your ducks, so they don't get damaged.

Second, the bigger the area around your garden that the ducks can be in the better. They will eat many of the bugs before they ever even get to plants if they can roam out far enough.

Third, don't overcrowd your ducks, about 2 ducks per 1000 sq. feet is what we have, and it seems about right.

Interesting ducks in the garden article!! Wonderful video! So sweet... the hen and her chick, funny chickens, ducks, and pig playing with the dogs. Nice music along with them too! (;

Great job with that video! Really enjoable! I really like the clip of the dogs playing with the pig, and the music you chose for that part makes it even better!
