Khaki Campbells are an extremely hardy dual-purpose breed of duck developed in England. They are great foragers and will eat a variety of pests including slugs, snails, and mosquitos.
History
Khaki Campbell Ducks originated in Gloucestershire England and were introduced to the public in 1901.
Size
With hens averaging 4-5 pounds, and drakes, 5-5.5 pounds, Khaki Campbells are about half the weight of pekins.
Temperament
These ducks can be gentle and friendly with humans if they are raised with lots of handling, otherwise they tend to be skittish. In our experience ducks are usually just not quite as friendly as chickens, even with handling.
Eggs
A healthy hen can lay up to 300 eggs a year, which is better than almost any chicken! Their eggs are white and weigh 75-85 grams on average, so one duck egg is approximately the equivalent of 1 1/2 chicken eggs.
Hens usually start laying when they are between 5-7 months of age, however, we have had Pekins start laying when they were only three months old! It was in May though, so the increasing daylight probably had something to do with it.
Color
Both hens and drakes are varying shades of brown, the drakes also have an iridescent green heads, similar to mallards.
Lifespan
With good care Khaki Campbells can live up to 15 years, but hens only lay for 4-5 years.
